SETE’s vice president, Andreas Andreadis and the association’s president, Nikos Angelopoulos, during the association’s 2010 overview last December. Mr. Andreadis referred to the year’s tourism traffic (2010), which he said would close with almost the same percentage of arrivals in 2009 (0.5 percent drop) but with a significant decrease in terms of revenue (seven percent drop). However, in regards to Greek tourism in 2011, Mr. Andreadis said that under certain conditions it is estimated that this year may mark the beginning of Greek tourism’s recovery.

During the conference, Labor and Social Security Minister Louka Katseli (second to left) said the government’s decision to lift cabotage restrictions would boost up sea cruise tourism. However, tourism professionals in the audience agreed that in reality cabotage had not been lifted as the conditions set by the Greek government discourage cruise companies from homeporting in Greece. “Cabotage restrictions were not completely lifted as the government’s conditions are yet another Greek originality that does not exist in any other country,” New Democracy MP responsible for tourism issues, Olga Kefalogiannis said (center).

Tourists enter a Hop On Hop Off bus for a city tour of Athens last month. Besides a heat wave, August did not present problems that would affect the stay of foreign visitors in Athens. However, this was not the case during the previous months.
