Greek Women Marketeers Rewriting the Tourism Narrative

Although half of all jobs in tourism in the world are done by women, the majority concern low skilled, low paid, and informal forms of employment, says UN Tourism.

On top of that, women have fewer opportunities for career progression, more obstacles when it comes to opening a business, and limited access to education and training. Add to this that less than 1 percent of all companies in the world have made efforts to narrow the gender pay gap in 2023 and you have blatant inequality.

To address this, UN Tourism announced that it would be offering webinars this year in different parts of the world under the theme “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress”.

In Greece, things are different and changing fast. Many of us traveling across the country have definitely experienced the ‘female touch’ that has made Greek hospitality world renowned. Dozens of young girls are now pursuing higher education in tourism, while hundreds of women are also leaders, running companies, corporations, hotels, tour agencies, media groups, and cruise travel companies. These very same women are the ones raising awareness, setting the example, and rewriting the narrative.

Every year, on occasion of International Women’s Day, GTP Headlines takes a closer look at what women in tourism are doing in Greece. The aim of our yearly special is not only to celebrate women’s achievements in the Greek tourism sector but to also highlight the importance of bringing females to positions that can foster change.

With this year’s UN Tourism motto for International Women’s Day in mind, we challenged Greece’s female professionals in tourism to answer the following question with a short phrase.

So… “How are women leading change in Greek tourism through marketing?”  Read on to find out!
