Kastellorizo is the Hidden Gem of the Greek Islands, Says UK Media
The small island of Kastellorizo is the “hidden gem” of the Greek islands, packed with history, natural beauty and “incredible hot weather perfect for sun seekers”, according to the Daily Star UK newspaper.
Highlighting that Brits are in search of lesser known holiday destinations, the Daily Star’s Sophie Foster says the Greek island is the best for “those who want a more remote holiday surrounded by a serene and picture perfect atmosphere.”
According to Foster, Kastellorizo can capture the interest of the British travelers with its long history which includes knights, castles and stately homes, as well as its small villages and sandy beaches. She highlights Castello Rosso on the reddish rock above the port boasts battlements and double walls perfect for military history buffs.
Foster also refers to the island’s local architecture as a “typical example of economic improvement” in the 19th century which led to the building of gorgeous homes on the Kordoniou coast.
“Taking a walk through the cobblestone streets, picturesque stairways and through arches will unveil the islands charms even further especially as the island is apparently barred to vehicles with more than two wheels. So there’s no traffic to bother you or add excessive noise,” she says, highlighting Kastellorizo for its calm and peaceful atmosphere.
A landmark of the island is the gothic church of Agion Konstantinou and Helenis. The church stands out for its roof that sits on twelve columns taken from the temple of Apollo in Patara Lycia.
For gastronomy enthusiasts, Foster informs on a variety of coffee shops and famous Greek taverns with homemade Greek food.
Concluding, Foster suggests visits to Mandraki Beach, near the island’s main harbor to explore the caves and salt baths, and to the large bay that surrounds the island “like a large swimming pool”.
Part of the Rhodes regional unit, Kastelorizo lies a few kilometres off the south coast of Turkey and is southeast of Athens.
The UK is one of Greece’s main tourism markets. A survey by insurance company Reassured recently found Greece as the most affordable country for UK retirees.
