Greek runner Charalampos Pitsolis is the winner of the 39th “Athens Marathon, the Authentic” (AMA), which took place in Athens on Sunday.
Cheered on by the crowds, Pitsolis completed the historic 45.2km race in a total time of 02:23:44. In second place, last year’s winner Konstantinos Gkelaouzos clocking 2:24:45 and in third Konstantinos Stamoulis (2:25:37).
“I was shocked to enter the Kallimarmaro [stadium] first. I’ve cried three times in my life: in 2019, when I entered the Kallimarmaro third, when I found out my wife was pregnant, and now after winning the Athens Marathon,” said Pitsolis.
First female runner to pass the finish line:
In the women’s category, 26-year-old Vasiliki Konstantinopoulou completed the race in 02:46:01, followed by Katerina Asimakopoulou (2:50:25) and Ourania Rebouli (2:50:42).
“I was planning on running faster, but due to the heat I decided to go conservatively… I received strength from the crowds. It was a great feeling when I entered and people were applauding. It was incredible,” said Konstantinopoulou.
5km run – Winners
In the parallel 5km run, the winners were Nestoras Kolios in 14:47 minutes and Maria Kassou in 16:36.
More than 45,000 amateur and professional runners from 92 countries and 3,500 volunteers participated in this year’s “Athens Marathon”.
Organizers, the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS) said sights were now on next year’s 40th anniversary Athens marathon.
Considered one of the most important races in the world of sports, the Athens Marathon is based on the route run in 490 BC by Athenian messenger Pheidippides, who legend has it died of exhaustion after announcing to the Athenians that the Greeks had won the Persians in the Battle of Marathon. The first Marathon race was organized during the 1896 Olympics.
Greek authorities have in the past few years focused their efforts on promoting the major international sporting event with the support of the hospitality industry aiming to establish Greece and Attica as a leading sports tourism destination.
