Going Nuts Over the Aegina Pistachio at Annual ‘Fystiki Fest’
The famed Aegina pistachio, known as “fystiki Aeginis”, takes center stage this week during the 7th Aegina Fystiki Fest, to take place September 24-27 on the Saronic isle.
This year, artists, sculptors and chefs will showcase their creations, which have been inspired by the Aegina pistachio, a delectable variety exclusively grown on the Greek island of Aegina and a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) product.
The local variety, which has been lauded by eminent chefs worldwide for its superior taste, will be on show (and sale) by producers at the trade fair along the port’s coastal road, where visitors will have the chance to find everything from the new crop and spoon sweets to pistachio-based pasteli and oils. A wide range of other Aegina products will also be on sale.
Parallel events will include photo exhibits, art shows, tours of local sites and theater performances. Events come to a close on Sunday, with the Aegina Port Authority Band marching by the seaside.
The island of Aegina is an ideal Athens getaway as it is located in the Saronic Gulf only 16.5 NM from the Greek capital, a little bit over an hour’s trip.
