Greek Water Airports: Seaplane Port on Kea Island Gets Approval
A new seaplane port to be constructed on Kea island in the Cyclades received approval this month, according to Greek Water Airports (Ellinika Ydatodromia), the company aiming to create and run an extensive waterway network across Greece set to offer travelers seaplane flights.
The port will be constructed in the Mavia area, near the “Bohemian Kea” after the request of hotel operator Bohemian Villas.
The project was given the green light by the Greek Navy, the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority and the Shipping Ministry, said Greek Water Airports.
The company adds that the Bohemian Kea seaplane port will operate in parallel with the waterway planned for the island’s main port allowing for the approach of more seaplanes all year round and under all weather conditions.
The company said it plans to proceed with the creation of seaplane ports on either side of island destinations in the Cyclades and Dodecanese to ensure all-weather access.
According to the company, the South Aegean Region is planning to operate at least 30 seaplane ports.
The first two seaplanes to operate routes once Greece’s waterway network is completed are ready and waiting for the go-ahead, according to seaplane operator Grecian Air Seaplanes, which belongs to a group of companies headed by Greek Water Airports.
Greek Water Airports Founder and Managing Director Anastasios Govas welcomed the decision, adding that it will pave the way for other seaplane ports to be constructed at other “points of tourist interest such as resorts, marinas, seaside and lakeside locations and sites which are inaccessible”. Govas went on to underline that seaplane ports will compliment waterways in order to provide access to more destinations.
