Expedia: 96% of US Travelers in Need of a ‘Nothing-cation’
Almost all US travelers are planning to spend a portion of their next vacation doing absolutely nothing, according to a recent survey published by Expedia’s travel app.
Conducted during December 2022 among 4,000 U.S. working adults in collaboration with international market research agency OnePoll, the survey saw 96 percent of those polled wanting a “nothing-cation”, a trip where warm weather and relaxation are the main attractions.
Relaxation is the central motto when it comes to a nothing-cation, but according to survey respondents, it’s also important to live life at a leisurely pace (54 percent), forgo a strict schedule (52 percent) and float the day away in the pool or ocean (49 percent).
Furthermore, most people (62 percent) agree that “doing nothing” is their favorite part of vacation and consider it time well spent (61 percent).
Other notable findings of Expedia’s research include:
– More than a third (34 percent) of travelers reported feeling burned out from the Christmas holidays.
– Parents of young children (4 years old and under) are particularly in need of a nothing-cation, reporting higher levels of post-holiday burnout than average (49 percent).
– Nearly half (47 percent) of US travelers say they like to start off the new year with a trip to look forward to as a remedy for feeling anxious (31percent) or tired of cold and rainy weather (34 percent) in January.
The company’s internal data also point out that a quarter of the total annual getaways are planned during the first month of the year.
Finally, Expedia’s travel experts propose Kauai in Hawaii, Costa Rica, Fiji, Nevis Island on the Caribbean, Koh Samui on Thailand, Algarve in Portugal and Sanibel Island in Florida as the perfect “nothing-cation” destinations.
