US rapper 50 Cent sent the message out loud and clear from Athens’ Olympic stadium this week: Greece is the word.

The international superstar joined popular Greek singer Konstantinos Argiros for a mega-concert at the 70,000-seat Olympic stadium on Sunday.

50 Cent reached out to his 47 million followers and fans through his social media accounts as part of an agreement with the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) for the promotion of the country as a leading tourist destination and concert hot spot.

The GNTO said the concert was “an important initiative to promote concert tourism in Greece” which could, if fully developed, attract audiences from neighboring countries, other Mediterranean nations as well as from the US and the UAE and thus contribute to the extension of the tourism season, which is a top tourism ministry priority.

Among others, 50 Cent posted videos of the concert, the stadium, Athens and the Athenian Riviera. Argiros also shared photos with 50 Cent before the concert on board a luxury yacht.

The GNTO aims through the deal to showcase Athens and Greece to younger crowds.

According to local media reports, the GNTO spent 93,000 euros for the promotional concert which coincided with the 40-year celebrations of the stadium’s construction. The organization said said all relevant procedures were carried out in a transparent manner and published online in the government’s Diavgeia system.

The concert was initially planned from October 29 but was instead held on October 30 due to “technical problems”, organizers Panik Records said in a statement, adding that they apologized for the inconvenience.
