Greek Sports Tourism and Culinary Events Happening in October

Greece’s tourism season is continuing well into October with four international sports tourism and culinary events scheduled to take place in the coming days.

Organized under the auspices of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) the events are the Navarino Challenge 2022, the 3rd Aegean Yachting Festival, the 12th Catamarans Cup and the Cretan Taste Awards 2022.

“We consistently support innovative outreach events, which promote and enrich the diversity of Greek tourism, strengthen the dynamics of our country’s individual destinations and contribute to the expansion of the season beyond the summer period,” the GNTO said in an announcement.

Running between October 21 and 23, the leading, award – winning sports event will take place in Costa Navarino and Pylos in Messinia.

In its 10th year, the event’s main goal is to promote sports and fair play through more than 10 Olympic sports for a variety of age groups.

The program includes a number of distance running races, tennis showcase matches, basketball for people with disabilities, a beach volleyball tournament as well as cycling in Voidokoilia and the Kalamari waterfall, kayaking at Sfakteria, swimming, rowing, gymnastics and more.

More than 2,700 athletes of all ages from Greece and abroad are expected to participate.

3rd Aegean Yachting Festival

Taking place on the same dates as the Navarino Challenge 2022,  the 3rd Aegean Yachting Festival will take place in the new marina of Rhodes.

More than 20 charter companies and boat support services, boat manufacturers and global premium brands will participate, while over 40 new boats will be presented. According to the GNTO, the event is expected to attract some 10,000 people to the Dodecanese island.

This year the festival will collaborate with boat show France’s Grand Pavois La Rochelle, which is the 5th largest exhibition of its kind worldwide.

The 3rd Aegean Yachting Festival aims to promote the islands of the South Aegean and especially Rhodes, while highlighting the country’s maritime and yachting tourism potential.

12th Catamarans Cup

The event will be held from October 22 to 29 with a start and finish at Alimos Marina in Attica and stops at the the destinations of Poros, Porto Heli, Astros beach and Nafplio.

The 12th Catamarans Cup is an international catamaran sailing race that combines racing adrenaline with a relaxing holiday on the Greek islands, especially during this off-peak tourist season.

This year, 30 boats with around 300 sailors from 18 countries will participate. At all finishing ports, special awards ceremonies will take place to honor the winners.

Cretan Taste Awards 2022

The Cretan Taste Awards 2022 will be held on October 25 at the Cultural Conference Center of Heraklio, Crete.

The awards recognize the best restaurants of Cretan cuisine, businesses offering authentic local products and initiatives that promote local culinary identity and tradition.

The Cretan Taste Awards are divided in six main sections while their evaluation committee is comprised by prominent representatives of the academic community, catering businesses and professional bodies of the island, leading Greek and foreign chefs and sommeliers, as well as respected food journalists and experts.
