The prestigious Travel + Leisure magazine has included Skopelos on its list with the “30 Secret Islands to Visit for the Ultimate Secluded Vacation”.

T+L’s list features unknown, secret islands hidden all around the globe, namely in Vietnam, Indonesia, Sweden, Mauritius, Nicaragua, Scotland and the United Arab Emirates among other countries.

Skopelos is mentioned 6th on the list for its hidden coves, blue-roofed tavernas and hundreds of Byzantine-era churches.

“A one-hour ferry ride from Skiathos, the island of Skopelos is so picture-perfect that Hollywood chose its Kastani beach as a set for Mamma Mia,” T+L says.

Meanwhile, divers from around the world reffer to Skopelos’ “Christoforos” shipwreck as one of Europe’s best preserved shipwrecks.

“Christoforos” sunk in October 1983 on the bay of Panormos. The ship left the port of Volos with 2.600 tons of concrete and was sailing to Piraeus and then to its final destination in Algeria.

The municipality’s tourism committee, has launched a new tourism strategy for Skopelos that is running under a new logo and the slogan “A piece of your heart”, with the aim to attract travelers in the post-Covid-19 era.
