Athens Marks World Animal Day with Call for Love
Dog lovers are invited to the “Sunday in the Park with My Dog” event at Rizari Park in Athens on Sunday, October 7
On occasion of World Animal Day on October 4, the feast day of Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, the Athens Municipality invites animal lovers to step forward and adopt one of 26 strays through its animal welfare program.
The city’s online Adopt a Stray scheme provides photos and details of animals that are seeking a home. Interested animal lovers wishing to add a new furry member to the family only need to complete a statutory declaration (known as ypefthini dilosi).
Animals up for adoption, under the Athens Neutering and Veterinary Care Program, are vaccinated, dewormed, neutered, and microchipped.
More about the program will be provided during the City of Athens “Sunday in the Park with My Dog” event at Rizari Park (Evangelismos metro station) on Sunday, October 7, from 10am to 6pm.
Volunteer, trainers and experts will be on the spot to answer questions, share insight and tips, and help you decide if you’re ready to get a dog and how to choose.
In the meantime, participants will also have the chance to take part in games, learn animal first aid, as well as join training sessions with their four-legged friends.
