Thousands Hit the Streets for 35th ‘Athens Marathon. The Authentic’ – Photo Report

Athens Marathon the Authentic logoMore than 51,000 professional and amateur runners from 101 countries enjoyed perfect weather conditions in the 35th “Athens Marathon. The Authentic” on Sunday, November 12.

The center of Athens resembled one big party, filled with scores of volunteers and thousands of spectators who took to the streets to cheer on friends and family.

The participation rate for the 42,195-meter Marathon Race alone this year reached 18,500 runners. All other registered runners participated in the 5K and 10K road races, the evening marathon race, the kids race and the Special Olympics race.

Kenya shined in this years “Athens Marathon. Τhe Authentic” on the original course as three Kenyan athletes crossed the finish line at the Panathenaic Stadium first.

The winner of the 35th marathon was Samuel Kalalei crossing the finish line in just 2 hours 12 minutes and 17 seconds. Kenyan athletes Milton Kiplagat Rotich and Jonathan Yego Kiptoo came second and third with 2:14.18 and 2:16.00, respectively.

Among the Greek athletes, the best performance was given by Kostas Gkelaouzos, who crossed the finish line at the Panathenian Stadium with a time of 2 hours, 27 minutes and 21 seconds (8th in the overall ranking). Gkelaouzos was followed by Hristoforos Merousis (2:28.19) and Panayotis Karaiskos (2:28.57).

Bedaru Hirpa Badane from Ethiopia dominated the women’s category as she crossed the finish line in 2 hours 34 minutes and 18 seconds. She was followed by Kenyans Alice Jepkemboi Kibor (2:34.22) and Nancy Jebichi Arusei (2:34.50).

Among the female Greek runners, for the third consecutive year Rania Rempouli came first, finishing in 2:49.05, ahead of Glykeria Tziatzia (2:51.13) and Fotini Dagkli-Paggoto (2:53.57).

The winner of the 10km run was Christos Kallias in the men’s category and Eleftheria Petroulaki in the women’s category. Winners of the 5km race was Georgios-Michalis Tassis in the men’s category and Bahrain’s Rose Chelimo (winner at the World Championship in London) in the women’s category.

This year, the Athens Marathon included parallel events such as the awarding of long distance runners Eliud Kipchoge and Mary Keitany with the 2017 AIMS Best Marathon Runner Awards (BMR) at the Athens Concert Hall. Portuguese distance running legend Rosa Mota was presented with the AIMS Lifetime Achievement Award.

Kountoura Runs for Tourism @ 35th ‘Athens Marathon. Τhe Authentic’

With the message “Run for Tourism” printed on her t-shirt, Greek Tourism Minister Elena Kountoura led the running team of the Tourism Ministry and the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) in the 5-kilometer race of the 35th “Athens Marathon. Τhe Authentic”.
