It’s Business as Usual in Sunny Halkidiki

It is business as usual in Halkidiki, despite the adverse weather conditions that recently hit northern Greece, the Halkidiki Tourism Organization said on Wednesday.

“Halkidiki after experiencing severe weather conditions the last three days, due to the climate phenomenon ‘Medusa’ that hit the region and caused extended damages especially in Sithonia, has started to recover,” the organization said in an announcement.

Strong downpours, which began on Sunday and lasted until Monday, in Halkidiki caused traffic problem and damages to several facilities such as camping sites, restaurants etc. The villages that were mostly affected are Toroni, Porto Koufo and Sykia.

According to the organization, Halkidiki authorities were alert of the weather forecast and acted immediately, minimising the damages.

“Everything is running smoothly in the region and tourism was not affected as some media published, the organization’s president, Grigoris Tasios, said, adding that media outlets overreacted and there were false mentions about tourists leaving the destination due to the problems.

“The truth is that most tourists took the opportunity and visited the city of Thessaloniki for shopping,” Tasios underlined.
