April 17 Greece National Strike to Affect Public Transport, Ferry Travel
Public transportation in Athens as well as ferry travel in Greece will be disrupted on Wednesday, April 17, due to a 24-hour strike called by the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE), the country’s main private sector umbrella union.
Among demands, GSEE is calling for solutions to the high cost of living, wage increases and the reinstatement of collective labor agreements.
Several unions in Greece will join the 24-hour strike.
According to announcements so far, on Wednesday:
– OASA buses and ILPAP trolley-buses will operate only between 9am – 9pm
– Athens’ metro lines 2 and 3 will not operate for 24 hours
– the tram will not operate for 24 hours
– the electric railway ISAP (line 1) will not operate for 24 hours
– the suburban (proastiakos) train will not operate for 24 hours
– taxis will not be operating from 5am until 3pm.
With regard to the national railway, routes are expected to be affected. Managing company Hellenic Trains has announced changes on its website.
Ferries will remain docked in Greek ports for 24 hours as the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation has announced its participation in the strike.
