Greece Praises Lanthimos for ‘Poor Things’ Four-Oscar Win
Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos’ work “Poor Things” won four Academy awards out of 11 nominations during the 2024 Oscars ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday.
“Poor Things” won Academy awards for makeup and hairstyling, production design, costume design, and for best actress going to Emma Stone, her second Oscar.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis praised Lanthimos for his win noting that his “perspective and narrative skill’ have captivated film enthusiasts worldwide and “filled all of us with pride”.
Mitsotakis went on to add that the Greek director’s work reflects a “Greece of perpetual exploration, creation, and progress”.
“May his artistic vision continue to inspire more and more people,” he said.
Also welcoming the news, Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni said the four “precious Oscars come to establish Lanthimos’ as a creator of global appeal”.
She added that “Poor Things” offers one of the most groundbreaking and refreshing glimpses into the modern cinema while “rewarding a personal path”.
“The well-deserved award arouses the praise and admiration of all Greeks. Many, many congratulations to him and to the excellent cast of ‘Poor Things’,” said Mendoni.
In addition to his Greek-language films, the 50-year-old filmmaker has so far received nominations for “The Lobster” (2015, Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay), “The Favorite” (2018, Academy Award for Best Director and Best Picture), and “Poor Things”, which also won the Golden Lion during the 80th Venice Film Festival last September.
