Athens – Attica Hotel Occupancy Levels in September Still Below 2019
Occupancy levels in September at hotels in Athens and the wider Attica region are still below pre-Covid 2019 but slightly improved over 2022, according to the latest data released by the Athens-Attica & Argosaronic Hotel Association (EXAAA) in cooperation with GBR Consulting.
More specifically, average September occupancy at hotels in Athens and Attica reached 93.7 percent, up by 0.7 percent over the same month a year ago and down by 1.1 percent compared to September 2019.
In the nine-month period to September, average occupancy reached 78 percent, down by 2.4 percent over the same period in 2019 but up by 14 percent over 2022.
The report’s analysts attribute strong September occupancy figures to the organization of conferences in Athens, and add that investments must be made to further develop the MICE segment of the tourism economy.
Average daily rate (ADR) in September stood at 171.35 euros, marking a 19 percent rise from 143.94 euros in the same month a year ago and from 123.67 euros in 2019 (+38.6 percent).
Revenue per available room (RevPAR) also rose in September by 19.9 percent to 160.48 euros from 133.89 euros in the same month a year ago and from 117.13 euros in 2019 (+37 percent).
Compared to ADR in rival cities in September, Athens fared well with an average room rate of 171.35 euros. In Madrid, ADR for the month came to 161.32 euros, in Istanbul 151.43 euros, in Berlin 149.41 euros, and in Vienna 152.18 euros.
In the January-September period, ADR in Athens came to 142.19 euros and RevPAR to 110.91 euros. Rival cities outperformed Athens in the period under review. Indicatively, the average room rate in Barcelona was 175.58 euros, in Rome 237.84 euros, in Paris 333.08 euros, and in Istanbul 148.11 euros.
Athens hotel occupancy levels, average room rates and revenues per room were also down in August compared to the same month in pre-pandemic 2019.
