MICHELIN Guide to Start Rating Hotels with ‘Keys’ from Next Year
The MICHELIN Guide next year will launch a special distinction dedicated to the hospitality sector, like the stars for gastronomy.
Aiming to highlight outstanding hotels and accommodations globally and give travelers a clear, reliable indication of where they will stay, the guide will has unveiled the MICHELIN Key, a label for excellence set to be implemented from 2024.
Published since 1933, the Michelin Guide is an exclusive star rating system that awards the most esteemed culinary establishments in the world.
“Just as the MICHELIN Star distinguishes those restaurants that are at the peak of their art, the MICHELIN Key recognizes the most exceptional hotels throughout the world,” MICHELIN Guide International Director Gwendal Poullennec said.
The new approach to hotel selection reflects the MICHELIN Guide’s commitment to recommending establishments that truly stand as destinations in themselves. This shift aims to combat the increasing standardization of accommodations and instead steer customers towards hotels that excel in all aspects, including architectural choices, craftsmanship, and personalized character.
“It is also an acknowledgment of the teamwork of committed enthusiastic hospitality professionals,” Poullennec added.
MICHELIN Guide hotel ‘keys’ based on 5 criteria
The updated MICHELIN Guide’s selection spans more than 5,000 hotels in 120 countries, encompassing various price ranges and diverse styles. The selection process is grounded in five key criteria:
– A Destination Unto Itself: Hotels contribute significantly to the local experience.
– Excellence in Architecture and Interior Design: Recognizing superior design and aesthetics.
– Quality and Regularity of Service: Ensuring consistent comfort and maintenance.
– Singularity Reflecting Personality: Celebrating the establishment’s unique character.
– Consistency Between Experience and Price: Ensuring a fair value for the quality offered.
The MICHELIN Guide’s selection operates independently of existing labels and pre-established quotas, with a focus on guiding travelers towards boutique accommodations that offer “more than just a place to sleep”. It also aims to enhance gastronomic experiences by enabling travelers to pair memorable hotel stays with exceptional dining outings.
To make the selection process and bookings seamless, the MICHELIN Guide provides an online platform. Travelers can browse and be inspired by the Magazine section, employ filters for accommodation searches, make reservations, complete payments online, and provide feedback about their experiences.
Starting in the first half of 2024, the MICHELIN Key will distinguish establishments recognized through anonymous stays conducted by the MICHELIN Guide selection teams. This annual recognition will spotlight hotels led by teams with exceptional knowledge and service.
