In Memory of Nikos Skoulas
Nikos Skoulas, a prominent figure in Greek politics, business and tourism, passed away in Athens at the age of 88 due to respiratory complications following a battle with Covid-19.
He leaves behind a legacy of nearly 50 years of dedicated service in various leadership roles in both Canada and Greece.
Born in 1935 in Anogia, Rethymnon, Crete, Skoulas pursued studies in economics and marketing in Toronto, Canada. His career spanned diverse sectors, including retail, wholesale, tourism, and executive education.
One of Skoulas’ significant contributions was to Greek tourism. He served the Greek government for a nine-year period in various capacities, including Director of a task force for the rehabilitation of “problematic enterprises”; Secretary General of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO); Deputy Minister of National Economy and Minister of Tourism. His leadership played a pivotal role in shaping Greece’s tourism industry during his tenure.
Skoulas was also instrumental in the media industry, serving as the first General Manager of MEGA Channel, Greece’s first private television network.
His entrepreneurial spirit extended to the tourism and hospitality sector, where he served as Chairman and CEO of Royal Olympic Cruises and Chairman of the Board of ASTIR Hotels, a renowned Greek hotel chain.
In the field of education, Skoulas made significant contributions as the President of Minoan International College, an English-speaking institution specializing in Business Administration, Tourism and Hospitality Management.
He authored numerous books, articles, and manuals on management, tourism, and food distribution, leaving an indelible mark on the academic community.
Skoulas’ public service extended beyond business and tourism. He was the founding chairman of the Friends of Olive Oil Club “Filaios,” served as Secretary General of the Food Bank, and was Associate President of the Greek Academy of Taste. Additionally, he held the position of Vice Chairman of the “Citizens Movement – We Consume what we produce,” reflecting his commitment to social causes.
The funeral of Nikos Skoulas will be held at Ano Glyfada, on Monday, October 2, 12pm.
