Corfu Airport to Close in November for Runway Works
Corfu Airport will close for two weeks in November and January for the second phase of runway reconstruction work, the airport’s operator Fraport Greece announced earlier this week.
The airport will be closed from November 21 to December 4, 2023 and from January 16 to 29, 2024. During these periods, only helicopter ambulance flights will be able to operate.
The works involve the complete reconstruction of the runway, which is aimed at enhancing safety and increasing the airport’s capacity to handle larger aircraft and more flights.
The runway’s suspension is necessary due to the size and complexity of the project, as well as the soil morphology and the surrounding area. However, Fraport Greece said the specified intervals are the shortest possible period during which the runway can be closed.
The company said the works are part of a broader plan to further upgrade the safety and operation of the 14 regional airports it manages in Greece.
“Regulatory compliance and safety, at all levels, are key priorities for the company,” Fraport Greece said in a statement.
The airport is a major tourist destination, serving around 3 million passengers a year. The closure is likely to cause disruption for travelers, but Fraport Greece said it is working with airlines to minimize the impact.
Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest information on flight schedules.
