Athens Mayor Aims to Improve Safety, Enhance Security in City Center

Actions that will improve safety in Athens and ensure the Greek capital is secure topped the agenda of talks this week between Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis and Citizen Protection Minister Notis Mitarachi.
During the meeting also attended by the head of Greek Police, Bakoyannis presented the minister with an updated map highlighting problem areas and violations by neighborhood and road in Athens.
“The time has come for a new model of preventive community policing, with the neighborhood policeman at its core,” said Bakoyannis.

Mitarachi said strengthening the police’s operational action plan to address criminality in Athens was a ministry priority.
“The goal is to redistribute resources by strengthening police stations that operate within the boundaries of the Municipality of Athens,” he said, adding that emphasis must also be given to road safety.
Earlier this month, the Citizen Protection Ministry announced that it would be introducing mounted police units which would be patrolling the historic center of Athens as of 2024.
As a regular traveller to Athens I’ve always found it to be safe. However, I applaud the Mayor and the Citizen Protection Minister for the suggestions being put forward.
