Germans Lead May 2023 Bookings to Greece, Turkey and Netherlands
Greece together with Turkey and the Netherlands saw significant growth in holiday bookings made by German travelers in May 2023 according to booking platform ANIXE.
More specifically, according to the June 2023 ANIXE Insights report, German travelers made almost 70 percent more holiday bookings to Greece, Turkey and the Netherlands compared to pre-pandemic May 2019 bookings, with Greece also showcasing a month-on-month increase of 40 percent.
Furthermore, data from the ANIXE Resfinity booking engine revealed that Heraklion, Crete, was the city with the biggest month-on-month increase in holiday bookings made in May 2023, with 80.6 percent growth, and it held the 5th highest booking share on the platform.
Spain and Palma Mallorca were the top booked countries and regions in May 2023, with a booking share of 17.3 and 9.44 percent, respectively.
At the same time, the report’s data indicated that when comparing booking shares to pre-pandemic times, a comprehensive overview is necessary.
Turkey, while experiencing an impressive growth of nearly 70 percent, witnessed a slight decrease of 6 percent this month compared to April 2023. Similarly, Spain exhibited signs of decline, with a decrease of 7.7 percent since the previous month, and the United States observed a reduced booking share drop of 13.4 percent.
During May 2023, Spain’s Palma de Mallorca, Turkey’s Antalya, and Egypt’s Hurghada continued to captivate tourists, consistently securing the top three positions among holiday-goers.
However, Antalya experienced a notable decline in popularity, with a significant 12 percent drop compared to the previous month. In contrast, both Hurghada and Antalya displayed impressive growth when compared to pre-pandemic figures, with increases of 136 percent and 52 percent respectively, compared to 2019 data.
On the other hand, Las Vegas, Barcelona, and Berlin encountered a loss in their allure, experiencing substantial decreases in popularity since April (22.5 percent, 20.3 percent, and 5.6 percent, respectively). When compared to the pre-pandemic period, Playa de Palma experienced the most substantial decline (247 percent), followed by London (103 percent), in terms of overall booked orders.
Overall, despite bookings being down 15 percent compared to Q1 2023, the report showed a 22 percent increase in bookings compared to the same period before the pandemic, highlighting that the travel industry has not only recovered but possibly expanded.
