The Vasilicos Caldera Heritage Suites on the Greek island of Santorini has been included on Condé Nast Traveller’s (CNT) Gold List for 2022.

The “Gold List” is CNT’s edit of the best hotels in the world – classics that have crafted their reputation and outlook over many years, or more recent favourites that have emerged fully formed. The list includes city big-hitters and safari greats, beachside island escapes and jungle dens, from Australia to the Caribbean, Hong Kong to LA.

The Vasilicos is the only Greek hotel – and one of only 12 in Europe – on CNT’s Gold list for 2022.

“Formerly the house of a passionate art collector, The Vasilicos is a boutique hotel like no other. Years of carefree holidays as a happy summer residence have lent it an air of laid-back luxury that permeates every little detail,” CNT’s Rachel Howard says while describing the property.

It was built in the 1980s by Vassilis Valambous, a Greek art collector and bon viveur, from a cluster of collapsed yposkafa – the island’s unique cave houses.

“The atmosphere still has the warmth, intimacy and personality of a home,” Howard says.

Perched high on the Santorini caldera, The Vasilicos consists of a constellation of cave-like structures – typical of Santorini architecture – which have been transformed into seven airy and elegant suites. Large terraces, unobstructed sunset views, and a rare level of privacy make it special.

Furnished with unique pieces, made-to-order or handpicked from the family’s private collection, the history of the property can be seen in every lovingly curated detail.

Upcycled keyrings, customised beach towels, and a capsule library in each suite all get a nod of appreciation, but the great winner is The Vasilicos team of ten who work tirelessly to make guests feel at home.

The hotel also boasts a sister winery – the Vassaltis Vineyards – on the island, therefore, its cuisine is carefully designed around the famous Santorini wines.

A sunset dinner on the private terrace is an experience not to be missed.
