Mykonos Not Hit By Wave of Cancellations, Says Greek Tourism Minister

Greek Tourism Minister Harry Theoharis on Monday assured that the tourist traffic on Mykonos is progressing smoothly despite the Covid-19 restrictive measures recently imposed on the popular Greek island due to the fast spreading Delta variant.

Speaking in parliament, the minister said that hoteliers and tourism professionals of the Greek island have denied media reports that refer to mass cancellations due to the curfew and music ban.

“There are no cancellations on Mykonos… I have spoken with hoteliers and they have assured that no bookings have been canceled,” Theoharis said.

In addition, the minister stressed that the government will not put the tourism season and the economy above public health, noting that if necessary, strict measures will be taken on other islands.

“We will not let things go for the sake of the economy and we are not afraid to take difficult measures,” he said, adding that the government will do everything possible for Greece’s health and safety measures to be followed.

“The Greek tourism product is safe because we put safety at the center of interest,” the minister highlighted.

“We never said this summer would be easy… We are doing what is needed. Every week we are adding more quarantine hotels in consultation with the competent health authorities… The increase in cases we see around the world is not from tourism but from the Delta variant,” Theoharis added.

The National Organization of Public Health (EODY) on Monday announced 1,834 new coronavirus cases, 8 deaths and 123 intubated patients. Fourteen of the new cases were travelers tested upon arrival, according to EODY’s data.

Since the start of the pandemic, the total number of cases in the country has reached 459,146. The Covid-19 death toll in Greece is 12,858.
