Hollywood actors Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are getting ready to celebrate the 200th anniversary since the Greek War of Independence and are inviting everyone to join them.
The Greece 1821-2021 bicentennial events mark the 200 years since Greece revolted against 400 years of Ottoman Turkish domination (since 1453) that led to the declaration of independence and the creation of the first modern Greek state.
The couple recently posted a short clip on youtube and social media urging people to visit Greece and participate in the events.
“We are so excited to celebrate with Greeks all over the world the bicentennial of 200 years of Greek independence. It’s an amazing thing to celebrate my Greek heritage… and we hope that you’ll all join us in celebrating what’s to come in this amazing event,” Wilson said.
She also called on viewers to visit the website of the organizing committee “Greece 2021”. Its English version was recently launched on www.greece2021.gr/en/.
Rita Wilson is of Greek descent while Tom Hanks was recently granted Greek honorary citizenship for his philhellenism. The Hollywood couple often spends their summer holidays on the Greek islands, while repeatedly expressing their love for Greece via social media.
“Greece the land of beauty, the land of democracy, the land of great thinkers, the land of wonderful people,” Hanks says in the “2021” video.
The “Greece 1821-2021” organizing committee has called on interested parties wishing to participate in the events to submit proposals on its online platform.
According to Chair Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, the committee wishes to hold events that will leave a positive imprint on Greece for the future.
