Athens Moves Ahead with Major Graffiti Cleanup Drive

Athens municipal authorities said this week that a far-reaching graffiti cleanup project was moving ahead after the completion of works on the Pedion tou Areos Park.

Municipal authorities said they used eco-friendly cleaning products for a period of six days in order to remove graffiti plaguing one of Athens’ largest parks, which has suffered serious decay over the years.

“We are putting an end to the impression of misery in the city,” said Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis. “It is a matter of choice and will… We will continue to convey the message of respect in Athens; the need to live in a clean, dignified capital,” he added.

The city’s cleanup drive is being carried out at a number of squares in the Greek capital including Kanigos, Varnavas, and Agios Antonios. Graffiti removal efforts are ongoing at Eleftheria Park, Emmanouil Benaki St, Amalia Ave and on city statues and monuments.

The overall works are part of the municipality’s efforts to upgrade the city’s image and improve the quality of life for its residents and visitors.

It should be noted, that though Athens is winning over travelers as a popular city break destination and garnering high marks by guests on the GBR satisfaction index, the city also scored low (5.6/10) in cleanliness.

Improving the city by cleaning up the work of these people will simply encourage them to do it again over the newly cleaned surfaces, unless you intend to have police guarding against this form of vandalism it will happen again, so why not create a few places where this form of expression can be done legally with the city’s blessing. The expressionists will always want/need to express themselves, if you don’t allow them to do it somewhere they will do it everywhere
