Crete To Celebrate World Tourism Day 2014 With Fairs & Cultural Events

The Region of Crete, the Regional Unit of Heraklion and the Greek National Tourism Organization are organizing a fair and many cultural events on the island on the occasion of World Tourism Day on 27 September.

Crete_world_tourism_1Events will run 25-28 September and take place in various locations on Crete. Also, there will be free entrance to all state archaeological sites and museums within the Regional Unit of Heraklion, on 27 and 28 September.

The inauguration of the fair will take place on 25 September at Saint Catherine’s Square at 18:30. It will operate daily from 10am to 11:30pm until 28 September and include a display of local products, folklore art items and religious tourism items and an exhibition of plants and flowers. Throughout the days of the fair, a presentation of the actions launched by the Heraklion Port Authority will take place (6-8pm).

The fair will also include theatrical performances and many exhibitions such as Christ on Crete Today, by Professor Euthimios Varlamis and the photography exhibition Landscapes and Daily Life on Crete, by the Greek Photography Company of Crete.

Musical concerts and performances will be hosted during the days of the fair and traditional Cretan cuisine lessons will be given.

In addition, the Municipality of Hersonisos will host a Fruit Festival on Friday 26 September at the Cretan open–air Museum for the Traditional Life of Crete “Lychnostatis.” The event is organized by the museum and the Women’s Association of Hersonisos “Vritomartys” to celebrate World Tourism Day 2014.

Guests will experience Cretan nature and folklore culture of Crete and have the opportunity to sample several Cretan fruits and obtain information about their nutritional value. The event includes grape-treading.

“Tourism and Community Development” will be the theme of this year’s World Tourism Day on 27 September 2014, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
