Zakynthos’ Famous Shipwreck Beach Closed Again for the Summer
Greek authorities have once again decided to keep one of the country’s most-visited beaches, Navagio on the island of Zakynthos, closed to the public due to safety risk.
The joint ministerial decision was issued last week by the ministries of climate crisis and civil protection, shipping and island policy, and tourism following risk assessment by the National Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (EPPO).
Based on EPPO President Efthymios Lekkas’ report, swimming is forbidden and boats will not be allowed to approach or drop anchor beyond a designated area. Additionally, viewing the beach from the cliff above is also banned allowing access only from a 10-meter viewing point.
Authorities banned access to the popular beach due to extensive landslide risk as a result of erosion on the perimeter slopes.
Anyone found violating the regulation will face fines.
Navagio beach was closed off again in 2023, 2022 and 2018, after a landslide injured seven people.
