IATA Conference Addresses Ground Handling Priorities
Enhancing safety measures, implementing global standards, and fostering sustainability across operations topped the agenda of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Ground Handling Conference (IGHC) which kicked off this week in Reykjavík hosted by Icelandair.
Key priorities discussed included transitioning to enhanced ground service equipment (GSE) aimed at improving safety for personnel and aircraft; utilizing data for injury prevention; mitigating loading errors through improved and more efficient communication between load control and loading teams; and standardizing processes which can be supported by the IATA Ground Operations Manual (IGOM) and the IATA Safety Audit for Ground Operations (ISAGO).
“Ground handling forms the backbone of aviation, ensuring safe and efficient travel for millions of passengers annually. As we anticipate a 12 percent surge in travel demand for the upcoming peak Northern summer season, it’s imperative that the ground handling sector is well-prepared,” said Director of Ground Operations IATA Monika Mejstrikova.
Lastly, the conference focused on ways to ensure a sustainable future through IATA’s sustainability roadmap for ground operations which focused on people, planet, and prosperity. In this direction, IATA actions include recognizing skills and training across ground handlers, airlines, and airports, facilitating the cross-utilization of skilled personnel; supporting ground handlers in making informed transitions towards cleaner GSE power for carbon neutrality goals; and reducing turnaround costs, minimizing operational delays, decreasing ground damage through efficiency gains, digitalization and automation.
