Germany, UK, Bulgaria Top Tourism Source Markets for Greece in 2023
Germany, the UK, and Bulgaria were the main source markets driving tourism to Greece in 2023, according to data released this week by INSETE, the Greek Tourism Confederation’s (SETE) research body.
More specifically, 5 million Germans visited Greece last year marking a 7 percent increase over 2022, 4.8 million Brits – up by 1.5 percent, and 2.9 million Bulgarians, up by 56 percent.
The Top 10 source markets for the year also included Italy, France, the US, Romania, the Netherlands, Poland, and Albania. Traditional market France marked a 1 percent decline over 2022.
Top performing regions based on spending per capita in Greece in 2023 were Crete, the South Aegean Region, and the North Aegean Region.
Overall, the country’s 13 regions welcomed 36.13 million visitors marking a 15.2 percent rise over 2022 and 31.36 million visitors.
According to the findings, the majority of regions marked increases with the Epirus Region reporting the largest by 58.1 percent.
Nights spent in 2023 rose by 5.1 percent over 2022 to 227.9 million. According to INSETE analysts, the number of nights spent dropped in the majority of the country’s regions with the exception of Epirus which marked a 35.9 percent rise.
Leading the way in terms of revenues was Crete with 19.74 billion euros in 2023 up by 14.4 percent over 2022. Crete also reported the highest overall increase in travel receipts by 41.9 percent and the highest spending per visitor at 941 euros up by 31.5 percent over 2022. The lowest expenditure was reported in Epirus at 193 euros down by 19.7 percent.
Lastly, the longest duration of stay in 2023 was recorded in the North Aegean Region with an average 9.8 nights down by 10.2 percent and the shortest at 2.5 nights in Epirus down by 14.0 percent.
