Thessaly Announces Initiative to Develop Walking Tourism
The Region of Thessaly recently announced a new initiative aimed at enhancing walking tourism in the area.
The initiative involves documenting the main trails in Thessaly and constructing a new real-time application that features all available trail routes. Through the application, hikers will have access to all the necessary information for their trip.
During a recent meeting in Volos convened to further discuss the issue, Regional Governor Dimitris Kouretas emphasized the potential of Thessaly to become a magnet for both foreign and Greek visitors.
At the meeting, officials announced the establishment of an operation center, which has already collected essential information from local stakeholders through a questionnaire. Currently, the results have identified 100 trails within 18 days.
Thessaly boasts a variety of trails across the mountains of Olympus and Kissavos, Trikala, Karditsa, Pelion, and the surrounding islands.
Officials noted that in previous years, various local bodies had initiated efforts to document the opening and maintenance of trails. However, these efforts have not been completed, resulting in limited accessibility to the trails of Thessaly for visitors.
During the meeting, the new regional authority emphasized the need for better coordination and pledged to promote collaboration among all the prefectures of Thessaly to address the current situation and develop the regions’s walking tourism product.
As a result, the documentation of trails will continue, with plans to enrich the existing data by adding new paths and their branches.
