HOTREC: Hospitality Representatives Agree on Policy Priorities Ahead of European Elections
Acute labor and skills shortages, uncertain digital rules and a changing political climate were high on the agenda of discussion during HOTREC’s 88th General Assembly held in Budapest on Thursday. HOTREC is the umbrella association of hotels, restaurants, cafés and similar establishments in Europe.
With the European elections and the Hungarian EU presidency just around the corner, industry leaders had the chance to reflect and agree on policy priorities.
According to HOTREC, over the next five years, European hospitality businesses seek to enhance tourism, support talent, promote fair digital rules, invest in sustainability, and adapt to consumer preferences.
“This year’s general assembly is a platform for the European hospitality industry to speak up and defend policies that will help hospitality businesses grow, stay competitive, and embrace sustainable practices,” said HOTREC President Alexandros Vassilikos.
Commenting on the Digital Markets Act, Vassilikos said it is a “game changer” for the European hospitality industry.
“We need to work with decision-makers to make sure the rules are fair and transparent, and that they support innovation while safeguarding our interests,” he said.
Vassilikos stressed that with the European elections nearing, HOTREC’s role is to reach out to MEPs and potential candidates to make sure the “voice of hospitality” is heard.
“Tourism and hospitality must remain high on the political agenda,” Vassilikos said.
HOTREC welcomes TUGEV as new member
Moreover, during the general assembly, HOTREC Director General Marie Audren announced that Turkey’s Tourism Development and Education Foundation (TUGEV) – joined the association.
“HOTREC is now a large and representative association, which is expanding,” Audren said, adding that the association remains a “committed voice” for European hospitality.
“It gives the industry a platform to speak up and make meaningful changes. Our unity is our strength,” she said.
HOTREC’s next general sssembly will be held in Warsaw, Poland, in autumn.
Considered the “voice” of European hospitality, HOTREC advocates for 46 national associations in 36 European countries.
