GNTO’s ‘Cherry Blossom in Pieria’ Initiative to Boost Tourism
The Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO)’s ‘Cherry Blossom in Pieria’ initiative earlier this month showcased the Central Macedonia Region.
The two-day event offered visitors the chance to learn more about Pieria and the region’s cuisine and culture with local stakeholders aiming to establish it as a yearly spring happening.
The event, part of the GNTO’s “Flowering Routes – Lafcadio Hearn” program, promoted the cherry orchards of Kolindros and Rachi in Pieria. The goal, said the GNTO, is to create a sustainable tourism product which taps into nature and the cherry blossoms of spring supported by artistic, cultural, and gastronomy happenings.
Speaking during the event, GNTO President Angela Gerekou said Pieria was setting an example for other regions to follow. “The two days gave us the opportunity to visit the cherry orchards of two areas in Pieria, where we shared experiences with reference to local traditions while we enjoyed the charm of the colors of the first flowering tree, harbinger of spring,” she said, adding that it was an effort which would promote tourism to Pieria and boost the local economy.
The Pieria mountains, she said, could evolve into an excellent mountain destination and the Elatochori ski resort also deserves to be upgraded. The initiative, said Gerekou, comes as part of government plans to extend the tourism season by offering cultural experiences, promoting new forms of tourism in mainland Greece, and increasing tourist spend.
Pieria Tourism Development and Promotion Organization President Yorgos Karalis said the event showcased Pieria’s sustainable tourism potential.
