WPL Athens Summit Welcomes Women Leaders from Across the Globe
Athens welcomed hundreds of women leaders from 57 countries on Wednesday for the “Women Political Leaders (WPL) Summit 2024” held at the NJV Athens Plaza Hotel.
Opening the event, Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni welcomed some 270 political leaders, policymakers, and advocates to the summit, held under the auspices of the President of Greece Katerina Sakellaropoulou, “in the birthplace of Democracy”.
Kefalogianni, who served as WPL ambassador in 2020-2023, stressed the importance of securing female representation in politics and improving institutions and mechanisms in order to ensure equal participation regardless of gender.
Greece was awarded this year’s event following the invitation of WPL Founder & President Silvana Koch-Mehrin.
Under the title “Democracy for the 21st Century”, the event will focus among others on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI), 24/7 media, new expectations regarding political efficiency, and violence against women in politics in six panel discussions.
On Thursday, Kefalogianni and Greece’s Social Cohesion and Family Minister Sofia Zacharaki will participate in a ‘fireside chat”.
Later that day, the WPL summit will move to Greek Parliament and later to the Acropolis Museum, where President Sakellaropoulou will be awarded during a special ceremony for being the first Greek woman to hold the country’s highest office.
