Greece Mulls ‘Greek Cuisine’ Label to Promote Gastronomy Tourism
A new label to be granted to restaurants in Greece that serve authentic Greek cuisine was discussed during a meeting between Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni and members of the Panhellenic Federation of Restaurant Enterprises (POESE).
Kefalogianni said the ministry was looking into the creation of a “Greek Cuisine” label that would be funded through EU resources as part of development plans concerning the gastronomy tourism segment.
During her meeting with POESE President Giorgos Kavvathas and secretary general Ioannis Daveronis, Kefalogianni also referred to the creation of a digital tourism map that will showcase each region, city, island and town, the unique characteristics, landmarks, sites, activities and local food products. The map, she said, will contribute to the promotion of the country’s F&B industry, agrotourism and gastronomy.
Both sides agreed that the best way to promote the country’s cuisine and products is through the certification of restaurants and products, which will also protect local dietary practices and traditions. POESE delegates also requested actions for synergies with wineries.
The minister went on to add that efforts were being made to brand Greek products and destinations and increase their visibility on the international market.
Last fall, the Hellenic Hoteliers Federation (POX), the Greek Federation of Hotel Managers (PODIX), and We Do Local launched the “Local & Branded” (Topika & Eponyma) pilot project, a gastro-tourism label branding sustainable products and services offered at destinations across Greece with the aim of supporting local communities.
