Report: More Destinations in Greece Need to Tap into TikTok
Greece may be one of the world’s most-sought after holiday destinations but local tourism stakeholders still haven’t taken advantage of one of the most powerful social tools on the market: TikTok.
According to the latest report by analytics firm Tourix, only 20 municipalities in Greece and very few regions use TikTok as part of their digital marketing strategy.
This may change soon after Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni announced that TikTok and new media would be used to promote Greece to new markets.
Top Greek destination on TikTok: Agios Nikolaos
In the meantime, the destination that has benefited most from TikTok’s reach is Crete and more specifically the seaside town of Agios Nikolaos with 20,000 followers so far.
Other Greek holiday favorites doing well on TikTok are Thessaloniki, Kefalonia, and Drama with some posts attracting millions of views.
Among the more consistent on TikTok are Kythira, Xylokastro, Parga, Katerini, and Chania (Crete) while new users include Sfakia, Kissamos and Ierapetra (Crete), Poros, Thasos, Kea and Kos.
The Greek region leading the way on TikTok is Halkidiki with 1.8k followers followed by the South Aegean Region.
Meanwhile, the Greek National Tourism Organization (Visit Greece) the country’s official account, has 11.2k followers while Marketing Greece’s and discovergreece account has 29.3k.
According to the report, 35 percent use TikTok to get inspired for travel, 32 percent of TikTok users have chosen a hotel or accommodation facility based on a post they’ve seen; 28 percent said they were prompted to visit a museum or site; 18 percent a city or beach; 15 percent a new park, lake or nature reserve; and 12 percent to attend an event.
Based on these findings, Greek tourism professionals and destinations in Greece stand to benefit for integrating TikTok to their marketing actions.
