Eurostat: September Commercial Flights to Greece Exceed 2019 Levels
Greece was one of six countries in the European Union to exceed pre-Covid 2019 flight levels in September marking a 10.9 percent rise compared to the same month in 2019, found Eurostat data.
More specifically, according to Eurostat, only six EU countries managed to outdo 2019 flight levels. Following Greece was Portugal marking a 9.0 percent increase in September, Cyprus with a 5.9 percent rise, Croatia (+2.6 percent), Ireland (+1.4 percent), and Malta (+0.7 percent).
September data demonstrates that Greece is making the quickest recovery in flight figures and fast approaching pre-pandemic levels.
Overall, in September, 605,806 commercial flights were carried out in the EU, up by 7.9 percent over September 2022 but down by 8.9 percent compared to the same month in 2019.
Strong flight figures were also recorded in the June-August period compared to 2022 – June (6.9 percent), July (7.4 percent) and August (6.6 percent) – but still below respective 2019 levels – June (-10.4 percent), July (-9.0 percent) and August (-8.5 percent).
The largest recovery in flight count over 2019 up by 20 percent was recorded in non-EU country Iceland.
On the downside, still very much below pre-pandemic flight levels in September were Latvia (-30.4 percent), Finland (-30.2 percent), Estonia (-25.4 percent), Sweden (-24.1 percent) and Slovenia (-22.9 percent ).
