Klafthmonos Square in Athens Gets 100 New Parking Spaces
The Athens Municipality recently added 100 new parking spaces at the Klafthmonos Square municipal car park, located in the historic center of the Greek capital.
The new spaces bring the total number of parking spots available in the car park to 515, “making parking in the city center a little easier” as Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis noted during an interview at Greek radio station SKAI.
During the interview, Bakoyannis admitted that traffic and parking at the Athenian center are ” huge problems” and the municipal car parks at Varvakeio and Klafthmonos squares offer parking choices with “reasonable short-term rent prices”.

Since 2020, when the Athens municipality reclaimed the closed car park, municipal services have been trying to obtain the necessary permits to operate its first level. After overcoming bureaucratic obstacles, the necessary permits were issued allowing the use of the first level while new signage and refurbishment works were also completed on all three levels of the underground station.
In addition, the upgrade of the Klafthmonos square car park to provide easy, fast, safe and affordable parking in the center of Athens, will include the installation of a free space detection and driver guidance system, which is expected to be fully operational in October.
The car park is located near the Acropolis and the National Gardens. It will be free of charge for disabled card holders.
