Greece May Soon Tighten Inspections for Illicit Liquor Violations
Deputy National Economy and Finance Minister Harry Theoharis is calling on the country’s Financial Crime Squad (SDOE) to intensify inspections at popular tourist destinations in order to identify illicit liquor violations.
In a letter to the head of SDOE, Theocharis is requesting that the crime unit increases checks focusing among others on the sale of alcoholic beverages to young or underage consumers. The minister was prompted following the deaths of three young tourists on the islands of Ios and Zakynthos.
Theoharis underlined the importance of identifying and limiting the trade and consumption of illegal alcohol, as well as of adulterated, dangerous alcoholic products and recommends SDOE submit its action plan to his office .
Among others, Theoharis is proposing that SDOE
– formulates an action plan within 10 days to combat the illegal trade of alcoholic beverages
– proceeds with the formulation of a strategic plan for the dismantling of criminal networks which illegally traffic alcoholic beverages
– increases the number of mobile units carrying out inspections particularly at popular tourist destinations.
Lastly, the minister requested he be briefed regularly of SDOE’s planning and inspections as well as of relevant findings.
