Greece Heightens Security at Airports and Border Points
A total of 1,188 police officers will be stationed at Greece’s airports and border points as part of efforts to enhance security, said Citizens’ Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos and Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias.
The two ministers met on Tuesday to discuss security measures weeks before Greece officially launches its tourism season.
Commenting after the meeting, Theodorikakos said that the first phase of heightened security measures were aimed at establishing Greece not only as a beautiful destination but as a safe one also.
“In this way, we support Greek tourism, businesses and employees in the sector, creating new development prospects,” he said. The minister went on to add that additional police officers will be stationed where needed.

On his part, Kikilias said Greek tourism was a key economic driver, creating new jobs and supporting local communities. The sense of safety, he said, was a very important part of the traveler experience.
“We are particularly pleased with today’s announcement … We feel that the unique tourism experience Greece can offer travelers and tourists during a season that is expanding should be based on safety, a main consideration for people to travel nowadays,” said Kikilias.
He expressed his confidence that 2023 would be a good year for the sector.
I think security officers are needed more in tourist areas but I am concerned they will just hinder tourists at airport areas.
Yes I agree completely that tourist soffer more in the center of Athens than anywhere else. Many tourist lose their passports, cards and valubles to vandal who are parading themselves in the city center, at metro stations, bus stations, tram stations and this is harmful to the name of the Country. Not talk of the ugly situation of drug adicts in the City center. We all welcome the decission of the Authorities to do something about insanities!!!
Please station more officers in and on the Athens metro, muggings happen with impunity against tourists in broad day light all the time by organized gangs daily , and no one does anything but watch ! Thank you .
