Countdown to Athens Half Marathon 2018
It’s the final countdown ahead of the 7th Athens Half Marathon on March 18, with a record number of participations set to make it the largest sporting event in spring.
More than 25,000 participants, 500 from abroad, have registered for the mega sporting event, organizers – the Hellenic Athletics Federation (SEGAS), the Municipality of Athens and the Attica Region – said during a press conference this week.
Addressing the press conference, SEGAS President Kostas Panagopoulos said organizers were aiming to invite elite athletes in 2019 in efforts to promote the event internationally.
“We believe in the prospect and the dynamic of the race… it is the ideal way to start spring… and we are pleased to see our efforts making a difference,” Panagopoulos said.
Organizers are expecting 25,000 runners: 7,500 for the Half Marathon, 12,500 for the 5km run, 4,000 for the 3km event and 1,000 for the kiddies and people with disabilities (AmeA) runs.
“The common goal is to promote sportsmanship in the city, to showcase Athens via prestigious events, and to create the stimulus that will attract visitors to the Greek capital,” said Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis.
The 7th Athens Half Marathon is being held with the support of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO). “The Athens Half Marathon together with the Athens Marathon. The Authentic contribute greatly to tourism development, not only for Athens and Attica but for the country as a whole,” said GNTO President Charalambos Karimalis.
