Athens Airport Arrivals on Upward Trend
Passenger traffic at Athens International Airport recorded a 27.95 percent rise, according to figures released by the airport authority this week, with approximately one million passengers passing through its gates in January, compared to 762,000 in the same month in 2013.
The report attributes the increase to growing competitiveness among airlines, which led to discounts on tickets as well as to the extension of the tourist period.
Domestic arrivals increased by 43.9 percent with 375,994 passengers compared to 261,361 in the same period, while international arrivals improved by 20 percent with 599,461 passengers against 501,075 in 2014.
The report also found that the number of foreign travellers visiting Athens grew by 32 percent, which it attributed to the success of promotional efforts that have made the Greek capital an attractive city break destination during the winter months.
In the meantime, the number of incoming flights increased by 17.1 percent, coming to a total of 10,749. At the same time, the number of domestic and international flights rose by 15.9 percent and 18 percent respectively.
