Greece Plans to Boost Luxury Travel Through National Tourism Zoning Plan

Luxury-hotelLuxury travel is included in the strategic development plan of Greek tourism, Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni informed the audience of the second Luxury Hospitality conference on 13 October in Athens.

According to the tourism minister, luxury travel is a challenge for Greece that could help create a strong brand within the wider geographical region.

Mrs. Kefalogianni informed that the government is making efforts to facilitate investment through a national zoning plan for tourism that is currently being drafted. The plan will include guidelines for the development of large tourism resorts designed to accommodate a range of  top quality infrastructure such as golf courses, marinas, spa facilities, conference centers and holiday homes.

She said that Greece has a targeted action plan to strengthen in many ways its tourism product, which “composes luxury on its own due to its uniqueness.”

In addition, she underlined the particularity of the Eastern Mediterranean region that attracts significant numbers of visitors from all over the world every year.

“That gives the Eastern Mediterranean the opportunity to emerge as an integrated, global destination and luxury tourism is one of the many challenges towards this aim,” she said.

The second Luxury Hospitality conference in Athens is organized by the Ecole hoteliere de Lausanne and the International New York Times.
