New Crete Golf Course Opens July 5

The course will be open all year around and includes clubhouse catering, a golf academy, practice facilities and a double-ended 300-yard covered driving range with short game area and two practice putting greens.

Greece’s newest golf course opens this month on the island of Crete. Owners say it is the most challenging golf course in Greece and one that will be meticulously maintained. The course takes in the typical ancient landscape of Crete and will host many of the visitors that come here to enjoy the island’s sunshine and history. The Crete Golf Club says it will offer the best of golf with 18 holes in a desert course design. “Each hole individually sculptured, seamlessly blending into the existing landscape.”

Designed by PGA Design Consulting of Great Britain, this course offers dramatic views and truly tests every aspect of the golfer’s repertoire.

Continually breezy conditions allow play in summer, while the mild Mediterranean climate invites you to each season. As a resort-style course, it will require the use of buggies. The course comes with the full range of practice facilities for novice golfers, tourists, golf club members and pupils at the golf academy. This includes a double-ended 300-yard covered driving range with short game area and practice putting green. The Crete Golf club lies approximately 24 kilometers east of the Nikos Kazantzakis International Airport of Heraklion and seven kilometers south of the town of Hersonissos, a favorite tourism destination on the island. The Crete Golf club lies next to a water park. The course will be open all year around.

Greece now has good courses at the Athens Glyfada area, on the island of Corfu, at Chalkidiki’s Porto Carras area and on the island of Rodos, as well as the new unit on Crete. New golf course investment is expected to get underway in the Sitia area of Crete, in the Peloponese (two in the Kalavryta area), on the Ionian Islands and on Evia. Government finances new golf courses in most areas of Greece to the tune of 40% of total investment.
