Calmness at Piraeus Port during the Easter period due to the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation’s (PNO) strike. According to reports, especially hit by the strike were islands usually not frequented by foreign visitors and dependent on domestic tourism (such as Syros, Naxos, Tinos, Patmos). PNO organized the strike to protest government plans to incorporate their social insurance fund into Greece’s main healthcare provider EOPYY (National Organization for the Provision of Health Services).

Centrally located hotel Classical Acropol on Omonia Square was recently closed down due to Greece’s economic crisis, according to an announcement of the Daskalantonakis Group in late January. The group controls the Grecotel chain of hotels.

Deputy Culture and Tourism Minister George Nikitiadis (center) held a press conference during the WTM and mentioned the difficult situation Greece was up against last year due to the economic crisis and other incidents that caused negative publicity. “All this time the government made an enormous effort on all fronts, the economy, education, entrepreneurship, tourism and investment and was able to restore the country back on track,” he said.
