Greece this year slipped one place to third spot on the Blue Flag quality award list after Spain and Turkey. In total, 395 beaches and 9 marinas in Greece have received the prestigious "Blue Flag" recognition.
Thirteen Greek beaches have lost their coveted Blue Flags after spot checks confirmed that their coastal managers had failed to maintain standards over the summer.
This Sunday, 21 July, at 1pm, a beach party will be held at the Agia Marina Beach on Aegina Island to celebrate its prestigious Blue Flag certification by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature.
Nineteen Greek coasts that were honored with the quality “Blue Flag” award in June were recently dropped from the 2012 list, according to the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature. The “Blue Flag” is a voluntary eco-label awarded to beaches across the world.
Nine Greek coasts, winners of the ‘Blue Flags’ international program for environmental education, information and awareness were dropped last month from the 2010 list and lost their award.
