Run Messinia is a new sport tourism event with a strong historical and cultural background and will be held during Ocotber 2-11. It’s an event to pay tribute to the heroes of the Greek Revolution on the 200th anniversary, with ambassador the Greek-American super-marathon runner Konstantino Karnazi, who has been established as one of the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME Magazine and as a Bestselling Author according to the New York Times as well.
Run Messinia is a race marathon, a total distance of about 421 kilometers, a tribute to the important events and unforgettable struggles of the heroes of 1821. Through the release of “Run for Freedom”, 10 athletes per route will attempt to run a total of 10 marathons, within 10 consecutive days, crossing historical places and monuments of Messinia, Laconia and Arcadia prefectures, which are close related to the Greek revolution.
The event aims to highlight the history, tourism and culture of the areas associated with the Greek Revolution in Messinia and Laconia, acting as a legacy for the future and building up the cultural identity of the wider area.
The “Run for Freedom” will start from Areopoli Laconia while runners will have the opportunity to pass through historical places such as Stoupa, Kardamili, Verga, Kalamata, Nedousa, Alagonia, Durres, Neochori , Poliani, Skala, Paloukorahi, Katsarou, Solaki, Meropi, Loutro, Diavolitsi, Ramovouni, Ano Psari, Zerbisia, Kalogeresi, Tripyla, Sellas, Maniaki, Agios , Kato Minagia, Koroni, Methoni, Neokastro, Sfaktiria, Kremmidia, Schinolakka, Paleokastro and of course to finish in the historic Pylos.
The collaborating Municipalities that support Run Messinia and contribute to the smoother performance of the event are Municipality of East Mani, Municipality of West Mani, Municipality of Kalamata, Municipality of Megalopolis, Municipality of Messina, Municipality of Oichalia, Municipality of Pylos.
The event will be held under the auspices of the Hellenic Tourism Organization.
