GEK TERNA Wins Tender for Attiki Odos Motorway Concession
Greek construction firm GEK TERNA was announced as the preferred investor in the tender for the new concession of Attiki Odos, Attica’s 70km motorway system in Attica, according to the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF or TAIPED in Greek).
GEK TERNA submitted the highest bid of 3.27 billion euros. The concession concerns Attiki Odos’ financing, operation, maintenance and commercial exploitation for a period of 25 years.
The consortium of Vinci Highways SAS – Vinci Concessions SAS – Mytilineos SA – Mobility Partner SAS, which submitted the second highest financial offer of 3.106 billion euros, was announced as “substitute preferred investor”.
“Henceforth, the tender process will continue in accordance with the terms included in the tender documents,” HRADF said in an announcement.
Attiki Odos is a modern motorway extending along 70 km, constructed on a concession basis during the 1990s, and constitutes the ring road of the greater metropolitan area of Athens and the backbone of the road network of the whole Attica prefecture. It is an urban motorway with two separate directional carriageways, each consisting of 3 lanes and an emergency lane (hard shoulder). In addition, the suburban railway of Athens has been constructed in the central reservation of Attica’s motorway.
The Attica Motorway is part of the PATHE (Patra - Athens - Thessaloniki – Evzoni) road axis and connects the Athens – Lamia National Road with the Athens – Corinth National Road, bypassing the center of Athens.
The financial offers submitted to HRADF for the Attiki Odos tender were record level. According to reports, they were more than twice the price paid for the concession of the 14 regional airports (1.234 billion euros) as well as for the concession of Egnatia Odos (1.496 billion euros), a motorway in Greece that extends from the western port of Igoumenitsa to the eastern Greek–Turkish border at Kipoi.
