Eurocontrol: Daily Flights to Greece on Upward Trend
The number of daily flights to Greece is on a steady rise, placing the country in the top summer destinations, said Eurocontrol this week.
More specifically, according to Eurocontrol’s aviation network update, Greece made it back into the Top 10 at number 9 with traffic to and from the country up by 17 percent and 1,325 flights daily in the first week of May.
The Top 3 destinations reporting the highest week-on-week change are theUK with 5,490 daily flights up by 4 percent, Spain with 4,821 daily flights (+1 percent), and Germany with 4,685 daily flights (-1 percent).
In the meantime, the number of flights to Athens increased by 6 percent, moving the Greek capital into the 16th spot with 646 daily flights. The total number of daily flights recorded in May rose to 28,444 or by 0.3 percent compared to the previous week.
Greece has managed to recoup approximately 92 percent of its pre-Covid 2019 air traffic in the period under review.
According to the same report, Ryanair, easyJet and Turkish Airlines took the lead in terms of week-on-week change: Ryanair – 3,039 daily flights (0 percent), easyJet – 1,627 daily flights (+4 percent) and Turkish Airlines – 1,527 daily flights (0 percent).
The Top 3 airports in terms of traffic were Istanbul Airport handling 1,434 daily flights, down by 1 percent, Amsterdam-Schiphol with 1,315 daily flights (0 percent) and London Heathrow with 1,278 daily flights (+1 percent).
Two low-cost carriers saw their flight volumes increase significantly, according to Eurocontrol: TUI operated +39 percent more than in Week 17, and moved up to 15th with 383 daily flights, while Jet2 increased by +31 percent and moved up to 21st spot with 324 daily flights.
