Thessaly: Destination Management Organization to Launch in Karditsa
The Karditsa Regional Unit in Greece is taking steps to establish a Destination Management Organization (DMO) that will effectively coordinate and manage the tourism efforts of the Region of Thessaly.
Following a recent meeting, the Regional Council of Thessaly approved the creation of the DMO and various parties signed an agreement.
The DMO will include Thessaly’s Regional Unit Karditsa, the Municipalities of Karditsa, Sofades, Mouzaki, Palamas, Lake Plastira, and Argithea, the Chamber of Karditsa, the Holy Diocese of Thessaliotis and Fanariofersalon, and Karditsa Development AN.KA SA.
According to the agreement, all parties involved are expected to define their responsibilities related to the DMO’s actions and provide technical and administrative support. Additionally, they will determine financial contributions for the implementation of actions.
The DMO’s main objective is to develop a strategic and operational plan for sustainable tourism development, management, and promotion in the region that will include cultural, religious, nature, and sports activities. To reach all interested parties and stakeholders, the DMO will use various promotion channels. Furthermore, it will represent the region at essential tourism exhibitions, conferences, and events.
According to the Region of Thessaly, the DMO is considered necessary as “tourism is a complex sector” that affects many areas of the local economy, as well as the preservation, protection, and promotion of the natural and cultural environment.
“Sustainable tourism development requires a balance between several independent factors, such as the preservation and protection of natural and cultural resources, private investments, targeted and up-to-date promotion, and the provision of high-quality services,” the Region said.
The Karditsa DMO will play a crucial role in coordinating the participation of stakeholders in the region’s development, strengthening and continuously developing tourism activity, and providing feedback to other sectors of the local economy. The newly established DMO aims to create a sustainable local development model that benefits the entire region.
