Mandarin Oriental Costa Navarino Unveils Fan Symbol Designed by Greek Artist Dimitris Papaioannou
The Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group recently introduced a customized version of its golden fan symbol, specially designed for the Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino by the internationally acclaimed Greek artist Dimitris Papaioannou.
The new fan design, inspired by the local culture and environment, opens up to reveal the unique nuances and textures of Messinia, featuring mountainous earth masses, green fertile lands, and the deep blue waters of Costa Navarino.
Reflecting the local culture and creating a unique identity for each of its properties has always been a hallmark of the Mandarin Oriental brand.
Thus, the new fan design for the Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino connects two ancient cultures – Greek and Asian – and captures the beauty of Messinia in a new and imaginative way, using acrylic paints on transparencies and markers on Japanese paper.
“For Mandarin Oriental, Costa Navarino we wanted to create a fan that would reflect Peloponnese’s heritage and culture,” said Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group General Manager Raul Levis, adding that Papaioannou’s aesthetic followed the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group’s style and created a unique fan for the resort.
Papaioannou rose to international fame as the creator of the opening and closing ceremonies of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. Since then, he has become a leading light in contemporary stage creation, captivating worldwide audiences at some of the most renowned festivals and venues with his monumental stage works including Primal Matter (2012), The Great Tamer (2017), Since She (2018), Transverse Orientation (2021), and Ink (2020). Hailed by Le Figaro as being, without a doubt, one of the four most important choreographers of our time, Papaioannou continues to innovate and inspire in the world of performing arts.
The iconic golden fan of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group logo was created by the design house Pentagram in the mid-1980s. The design house was tasked with creating symbols that embody luxury, elegance, and Asian culture.
Since then, this internationally recognized logo has become an inspiration for each hotel in the Group’s portfolio to create its own fan symbol that reflects its uniqueness and hospitality.
